Guiding pathways for professional growth and recognition

FGASA pathways provide structured professional recognition for guides and trackers developing careers within the safari industry. Currently, there are two professional pathways to attain designated professional recognition:

  1. Field Guide Career
  2. Trails Guide Career

Field Guide Pathway

Visual Progression:

Progression field guiding career for any qualified guide operating in a natural environment.

Student → Apprentice Field Guide  → Certified Field Guide → Certified Professional Field Guide

 

Apprentice Field Guide

Legally registered and Board assessments achieved – your first foothold into becoming a designated professional. Designed for recently qualified guides beginning to build workplace experience and professional competence under mentorship.

 

Certified Field Guide

The first FGASA Designation and recognition level – Assessed competence in knowledge and practical competency. Recognises guides with verified workplace experience ( a minimum of one year as a working guide) , guiding competence and practical field ability.

 

Certified Professional Field Guide

Represents advanced professional recognition for experienced guides (a minimum of three years as a working guide) demonstrating sustained professionalism and leadership, advanced knowledge and practical skill in the field.

 

Trails Guide Pathway

Guiding guests safely on foot through dangerous game areas requires experience, judgement, humility and deep situational awareness. The FGASA Trails Guide pathway, developed to support the progressive growth of guides operating in these areas. Through structured mentorship, practical experience and professional development, the pathway has become an established framework within the Southern African guiding industry.

Apprentice Trails Guide

The first step into wilderness walking and dangerous game guiding under mentorship and structured assessment. Mentored from day one, a supervised foundation of real walking experience lead by highly skilled FGASA walking mentors.

 

Certified Trails Guide

Recognises guides that have completed the foundational mentored programme with verified logged dangerous game walking experience, advanced judgement and practical competence and guiding ability.

 

Certified Professional Trails Guide

Advanced professional recognition for experienced trails guides demonstrating consistent competence, leadership, sound judgement and responsibility while guiding on foot in areas where dangerous game may be encountered. This designation recognises guides who have accumulated substantial practical experience, including a minimum of 600 verified logged hours and 300 encounters, who continue to uphold high standards of professionalism, safety and wilderness ethics.

 

Master Trails Guide

The pinnacle of professional recognition within the FGASA Trails Guide pathway, representing extensive field experience, advanced leadership, mentorship and sustained professionalism in walking trails.  This designation recognises highly experienced trails guides who have demonstrated exceptional judgement, responsibility and consistency while operating in areas where dangerous animals may be encountered. Requirements include a minimum of 1,200 verified hours as a walking guide and at least 600 recorded dangerous game encounters, reflecting significant practical experience gained over time in the field

The ultimate recognition and certification beyond, Certified Master Trails Guide is the FGASA Scout Certification.

 

Wildlife Tracker

Coming soon : FGASA supports the recognition pathways that elevate wildlife tracking as a respected professional discipline rooted in observation, interpretation and environmental understanding, particularly in a tourism, lodge environment.

 

Recognising Experience Already Earned

FGASA’s Recognition of Prior Learning (PRL) allows experienced guides to pursue  professional recognition. On application and the submission of a portfolio of Evidence,  an RPL officer will evaluate all evidence of qualifications and working experience.
